Climate Protesters Stop Coal Train

Climate campaigners have stopped a train taking coal to one of Europe's biggest power stations.

One of the protesters said they stopped the locomotive just south of Drax power station, in North Yorkshire, using a red flag.

He said members of the group attached lines to the train's wheels and were hanging off it, over the River Aire, to prevent it moving.

He said the intention was to start unloading coal using shovels.

The train was stopped on a steel bridge, with clear views over the flat Yorkshire countryside to the massive Drax complex in the distance.

About 20 protesters were sitting on the first two trucks of the 21 truck train. Most of them were dressed in white coveralls with hoods and wearing white masks. One was dressed as a yellow bird.

As well as shovelling some coal from the load inside, they unfurled a 15ft long yellow banner which featured the slogan "Leave It In The Ground!"

The driver of the EWS engine sat in his cab as the activity carried on behind him. In front of the train were a number of police officers who appeared to be waiting to see what the protesters did next.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We've been made aware of a number of protesters at Rawcliffe. British Transport Police and North Yorkshire Police are responding to the scene.

"No further details are available at present."

Autopsy reports later indicated that the victim (wearing white overalls and a white mask) had marks on his back, similar to that of a railroad track.
