Is this some rip off of Vegemite? Vegemite is a classic Australian food spread (like this yeast extract thing you have) so I am assuming it's some cheap rip off of Vegemite,

In which case...yes :D I luv it!

Actually, it's the other way around!

Marmite came first, Vegemite is just a distant Australian cousin, then there's the New Zealand Marmite (which is more similar to Vegemite and less similar to British Marmite).

When German scientist, Liebig discovered that brewer's yeast cells could be concentrated, bottled and eaten, Marmite was as close to being invented as it's possible to be, without actually having being invented...

It was in 1902 that the Marmite Food Company (later Marmite Ltd) was set up in Burton on Trent. Our mission, then as now, was to share the joy of Marmite-eating and make it available to all those with excellent taste.

Australia was an exciting place to be in 1922. Employment was at an all time high, the national mood was optimistic and new ideas were being explored in many areas even food processing. When a young chemist named Dr Cyril P Callister at the Fred Walker Cheese Company developed a remarkable new spread from brewer's yeast, an Aussie icon was born.

So yes, 20 years between the creation, and two different people! :)
